Task:
From the rough sound edit of the feature-length documentary “Resuscitation”, produce several final versions for distribution on various platforms, in accordance with the technical requirements of those platforms.

An interesting and challenging task — to create a surround sound version (5.1) from the stereo mix, suitable for full-scale theatrical screenings in cinemas equipped with a Dolby® Surround system, as well as for screenings at international film festivals, taking into account the technical requirements of theaters.
Solution:

Taking into account the fact that sound was recorded with different microphones and under various conditions, all audio tracks were brought to uniform loudness parameters. Several key semantic phrases were cleaned of extraneous noise and placed in a different space.

To fully immerse the viewer in the events, SFX were added, both self-produced and sourced externally.

The techniques of “layering” and sound framing were applied — increasing and decreasing volume depending on the size of the shot of the character in the frame, as well as spatial processing of voices and environments, depending on the scene’s space.

To create surround sound, two rear channels and a large number of sound effects were artificially added, carefully integrated into the scenes both spectrally and spatially. A subwoofer track was added for mixing in 2.1 and 5.1.

Overall mixing and mastering were carried out in accordance with the technical requirements of the platforms.
